The International Conference Ex Baetica Amphorae. Baetican oil, preserves and wine in the Roman Empire was held in Sevilla and Écija between 17 and 20 December 1998. This conference attracted the greatest specialists in the production and commercialisation of Roman amphorae, and for four days they debated the amphoric production of Baetica between the 1st century BC and the 4th century AD.

The conference was divided into four sessions: ‘Amphorae production in Baetica’; ‘Baetican amphorae in the rest of Spain’; ‘Baetican Amphorae in Europe and the Mediterranean’; and, ‘Methodology and varia’. The number of presentations submitted was so high that the proceedings tool four volumes, published in 2000 by Gráficas Sol, in Écija (at that time, internet was only beginning). In total, the proceedings were 1389 pages long.

Ex Baetica Amphorae was a milestone in the research about the commercial economy and amphoric production in Baetica, and the proceedings have become a reference in all the regions in which Baetican amphorae arrived through trade, as recorded by archaeology.
